A Quiet Box That Keeps Long Colour Runs Honest
Push a colour changing LED strip far enough down a run and the far end starts letting you down. Brightness tails off, the whites go slightly grey, and a colour that looked clean at the first metre looks tired at the last. The Collingwood PR3002 is the answer to that. It is a 24V power repeater for RGBW LED strip that takes the four colour signal arriving from the controller and sends it onward at full strength.
There is nothing decorative about it, and that is rather the point. It has no lens and no light output of its own. Its entire job is to let one controller cover far more ground than it could manage alone, then disappear into the void once the boards are back on.
The White Plastic Module
The PR3002 comes as a slim white plastic case, 170mm long by 58mm wide and only 28.5mm tall, weighing around 0.2kg. That low profile matters more than it sounds, because these units almost always end up in a shallow ceiling void, a plinth recess or the back of a cabinet where there is very little depth to play with.
Screw terminals run along both long edges. One side takes the 24V DC input and the incoming RGBW signal, the other side carries the four colour output through to the next length of strip. Each terminal is printed on the lid, so the wiring is legible at a glance rather than something you have to work out from a folded sheet. A moulded fixing lug sits at either end, with a screw hole so the unit can be fastened down flat instead of being left loose in a ceiling.
How It Works
A Collingwood colour changing system needs three things: a C100924 controller to decide the colour, a separate 24V DC driver to supply the power, and the strip itself. The PR3002 slots in between. It reads the RGBW signal coming in from the controller and reproduces it faithfully on its own output, using fresh power drawn from the driver on its DC input rather than whatever is left in the line. Collingwood publishes a rating of 39W per channel at 24V across its four outputs.
Repeaters are wired in parallel from the controller rather than chained one behind another, which is why the signal stays strong however many you add. Collingwood states that up to 100 units can run from a single C100924 controller, covering as much as 1000 metres of LED strip per zone. The unit is supplied on its own, so the driver, the controller and the strip are all specified separately. It runs at 24V extra low voltage on the secondary side, but the driver feeding it is a mains connection, so this is work for a qualified electrician.
Where It Works Best
This is a component rather than a fitting, so the question is less which room and more where in the build it lands. Typical homes for it are long cove and coffer details that wrap a whole ceiling, staircase and handrail runs across several floors, perimeter lighting in a bar or reception, and kitchen schemes where strip runs under the wall units, along the plinth and inside glazed cabinets from one controller.
It is also the piece that makes larger garden and facade schemes practical, where colour changing strip runs the length of a terrace or around a building and a single controller could never hold the signal that far. In every case the repeater itself gets mounted somewhere dry and reachable: a ceiling void with an access hatch, a cabinet carcass, a plant room, a utility cupboard, or a suitable weatherproof enclosure if the strip it feeds is outside. Leave it accessible. It is far easier to fault find on a unit you can actually reach.
