A Compensator That Stops LED Dimmers Flickering

This module is fitted alongside a Buster + Punch dimmer, not instead of one. Its job is to stop the flicker or buzz that can happen when a dimmer is used with LED bulbs below its minimum rated load.

How It Works

Wired into the same circuit as the dimmer on a 230V, 50Hz supply, the compensator adds a small background load so the dimmer sees enough wattage to operate smoothly, even when the LED bulbs on the circuit draw very little power on their own. It does not switch or dim anything itself, it simply keeps the dimmer it is paired with working correctly. As with all mains connected Buster + Punch modules, installation should always be carried out by a qualified electrician.

Where It Works Best

Worth adding wherever a Buster + Punch dimmer is controlling low wattage LED bulbs, particularly a small number of them, which is exactly the situation most likely to cause flickering without a compensator in the circuit.

Buster + Punch was founded in 2013 by Massimo Buster Minale, an architect who had worked at practices including Foster + Partners before spending his evenings building custom motorbikes by hand in a Shoreditch garage, machining his own parts to solve problems the parts on the shelf did not quite solve. A compensator module for LED flicker is a small, unglamorous example of the same instinct, engineering out a real problem rather than living with it.

Does this module dim the lights on its own?
No. It works alongside a separate dimmer module and does not switch or dim anything by itself.

When do I actually need one of these?
When a dimmer is controlling LED bulbs with a very low total wattage, which is the situation most likely to cause flickering or buzzing without a compensator on the circuit.

Who should install this?
A qualified electrician. This is a mains connected component and should always be installed and wired by a suitably qualified person.
