In practical terms, they're very similar: both scatter light evenly and hide the bulb. Opal is created during manufacture as an inherent property of the glass, while frosted can sometimes be a surface coating, though most modern opal and frosted shades work the same way.

Will opal glass age or cloud over time?
No, the milky quality is built into the glass during manufacture and is permanent. It won't change or deteriorate with age or cleaning.

Does opal let through as much light as clear?
