The colour is applied by hand at Mullan Village before firing, building up differently across every individual piece. In natural daylight the blue earth reads as cool and aquatic. With the warm G9 bulb in the evening the deeper blues and greens within the glaze come forward and the pendant takes on a richness that adds genuine atmosphere to the room beneath it. Suspended on 1m of cable, it works equally well as a single statement piece or grouped above a longer surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eHow It Works\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe open ceramic shade faces downward, directing the G9 bulb's light into the room. Without a glass shade the blue earth ceramic does all the visual work, the colour shifting as the quality of light around it changes through the day. Ceramicist Stephen Kieran developed the blue earth finish as a translation of the blues and greens of the Irish landscape into a hand painted ceramic glaze.
