Outdoor lighting is an essential part of your garden. However choosing outdoor lights correctly is vital to create the desired lighting effect and longevity of your design.

The material used to construct the light fitting is also another factor. Just because a light fixture is stated as being stainless steel, this doesn't automatically indicate that this will be rust-free. There are many grades of stainless steel and unless you purchase 316 marine grade stainless steel, there is a high chance that your 'stainless steel' light will rust! The thickness of material/metal is another feature, it may be made of copper but if it is built like a tin can, the chances are it will not 'stand up' to the abuse that lights can take i.e. from gardeners etc.

Many people purchase solar lights in the hope that they will not only save money but create the desired effect. The truth is, at the moment there is not a solar light on the market that can compete with low voltage lights in terms of output and effect. LED lighting is increasing I popularity however if you a have purchased a low voltage system, they will probably be able to take LED light bulbs. These bulbs allow the user to keep their lighting system but have the benefits of LEDs. However this does need discussing with your electrician as the transformer for your low voltage lights may need replacing but overall, the cost of this is far less than having to completely renew the existing lighting.
